🎨 Top 5 Websites for Free 3D Models

Best Sources for SketchUp, AutoCAD & 3D Modeling

🔍 Searching for the Perfect 3D Model?

Are you tired of spending hours modeling complex furniture from scratch? Or struggling to find high-quality assets for SketchUp, AutoCAD, or Revit? You are in the right place!

Today, I am going to reveal the Top 5 Hidden Gem Websites where you can download professional 3D models for FREE. We will dive deep into how to use them, avoid geometry errors, and even use secret plugins to speed up your workflow.

Let's get started and countdown from the Top 5!

#5. CADdetails

CADdetails.com is a website that provides manufacturer-specific 3D models for 3D modeling. It is highly organized but sometimes feels more technical than artistic.

How to Download Models:

  • Step 1: First, Click on BIM Models.
  • Step 2: Here you can filter the models by 3 different categories: Filter by Company, Filter by Master Format, or Filter by Product.
  • Step 3: You can also just type in what you want in the Search Box. By default, it will search for Companies, so just go up and change it to "Products". Then go down and check the "3D Models" box.
  • Step 4: When you see a model you like, just click "View Product". It will open up the product page with all the information.
  • Step 5: You need to Sign Up to download the models. Once signed in, scroll down and download the file.

Verdict: Although it has a lot of models and is very well organized, it's quite hard to find complex and high-quality artistic models on this website. That's the reason why it's Number 5.

#4. pCon.box Solutions

pCon.box is a website that provides brand-specific 3D models that are mostly Office Furniture.

Navigation & Controls:

  • Start by clicking the first button on the sidebar to choose a Brand or Company. Once you select a product, it will show up in the modeling space.
  • Move: Left Click and Drag the object.
  • Orbit: Hold and Drag the Middle Mouse Button.
  • Pan: Hold and Drag the Right Mouse Button.

Configuration & Downloading:

The next button on the sidebar lets you Configure the 3D model. For example, with a chair model, you can change the Material Class, Cover Material, Shell Material, or even the Wheels of the chair.

The last button lets you download the model. We are interested in .3DS and .DWG files.

  • .3DS Files: These often come with Textures, which is super cool. However, sometimes importing .3DS files into SketchUp can create errors in the geometries (messy lines).
  • .DWG Files: You can download the DWG file instead. As you can see, the DWG file doesn't have those geometry errors, but of course, it doesn't come with textures.

Verdict: That geometry error is a minor flaw when using this website for SketchUp, that's why it's ranked 4th. However, a cool thing is that you can set up multiple 3D models in your browser before exporting.

#3. CGTrader

CGTrader is a 3D Model Marketplace where anyone can share and sell their models. Even though most of these models cost money, there are a good amount of high-quality models that are Free as well.

How to Find Free Models:

  • Step 1: First, search for what you want in the search box (e.g., "Sofa").
  • Step 2: In the Price Filter, check the "Free" box.
  • Step 3: For formats, type in "SketchUp".

Even though it still shows some Premium models, you can now see many models that are free. Click on a model you like to see more details. It will tell you the available formats and versions.

Downloading: Click to start the download. It will take a while to get ready, and the download link will pop up. If you are already signed in, the download starts immediately.

#2. BIMobject

BIMobject.com is a similar site to CADdetails but it's even larger. It is also very well organized.

Search & Filter:

You can start searching by choosing categories or simply entering a product name. If you are looking for SketchUp models, click on File Types and choose SketchUp. Now it will only list models that have the SketchUp format available.

The Secret Weapon: SketchUp Extension

A cool thing about this website is that it has an Extension or Plugin for SketchUp.

  • On the website, go to Apps > BIMobject Apps.
  • Scroll down to SketchUp and click Download.
  • Install the extension. You will get a toolbar in SketchUp (View > Toolbars > BIMobject).
  • Important Step: When you try to use it, a window will pop up asking for a user key. Go to your account on the BIMobject website, copy the "User Identification Key", go back to SketchUp, paste it, and sign in.

Now you can download models directly inside of SketchUp without leaving the software!

#1. 3D Warehouse

3D Warehouse is still my Number One place to go for SketchUp models.

How to Find High-Quality Models (The Trick):

I know a lot of you have problems finding good quality models here, but trust me, they do exist. Here is the trick:

  • Search for an item, for example, "Books".
  • At first, you might not see decent models.
  • Go up and click on the "Collections" tab. This will show you Collections that have Book models in them.
  • Collections are curated by other users and often contain much higher quality models than the general search results. Just keep exploring these collections!

Bonus Features:

3D Preview: Use the 3D preview button to inspect the model before you download it to ensure it matches the photo.

Download Materials: If you click on the "Materials" section of a model, you can actually download individual materials/textures used in that model without downloading the whole geometry.

Lastly, when you find a model you like, make sure to add it to your own Collection so you know where to look next time!
