You cannot. Even their student edition is paid. If you’re a student, Autodesk products are available download solidworks free for under a 3 year student license. Fusion 360 is up and coming as a really good all rounder for CAD and CAM so I would suggest getting into that if you’re open about trying out new software. Fusion 360 has an online cloud storage and you can import files from pretty much any software and convert it internally without requiring a step file.
They’ll be introducing sheet metal in july so if that’s what you need your CAD software for, you can try inventor. When I switched from solidworks to inventor, I found no change in pace or work flow so it’ll be a good way of getting a hands on feel on different software to find your niche.

But why not just use Autodesk’s Fusion 360? It is free and you can exchange .step files. Fusion has about the same features and is a little easier to use.
There is a lot of misinformation about Fusion, mainly because it is a moving target that is updated frequently. And the terms of the free license keep improving. As of mid 2018, it is free for anyone who does less than $50,000 of business with it. So it is free for all small time users.
Some will call it “cloud based” but, not really. It runs on your computer (Mac or Windows) it has free built-in cloud storage but you can upload and download to local storage
It does 3D modeling and has built-in CAM for printers, mills and lathes.
Why is Autodesk giving this away? I think because they expect to make more money if they do. Why? A long tie ago Autodesk’s Autocad was the most widely pirated program. Far more illegal copies existed then paid for copies. At first Autodesk was upset and then they got smart and fifored out the almost zero of the pirated copies were a lost sale. So they lost no money.
The kid who downloaed the program was not ever going pay them $3,000. And anyone who needed it for real work has able to pay and needed the support. The free copies where the best advertising they could ask for. By being free MANY people learned to use it and then would buy it when they had real work to do. I think Autodesk is doing this again but only this time making it completely open. It is free for use until you make $50,000 using it.
Not when I got it but it was less than half price. You are also not suppose to install it in more than 1 computer but your hacker friend can fix that. You also are not suppose to sell any of your work done with the student copy so if you ever get a big money client or a high profile job where your work may show up in a news report or something, get your work into a registered program to make the printouts or get the client to buy the program for you! Litigation can tie up a project for a year at least!
You can also get download solidworks free to licence your student copy when you graduate by paying the fees (usually less than buying the newest version.) After you get up and running get the newest one and deduct it on your taxes but don’t do it until you owe taxes! (Profits!)

Is Solidworks free for students?
A word of advice about all computer aided design programs. Every time they upgrade a program you will have to re-learn it and your favorite tricks may disappear. They might still be there but you’ll loose a lot of time finding them and learning all the new stuff. I have 2 old computers with Windows 8, I think, and 1 very old computer with Window 95 just for those old programs and old portfolio work that I may want to access.
I never upgraded my download solidworks free student because we used it for our design development and I created our drafting in Autocad, I’ve got 3 different versions on 3 different machines, because we were always working with manufacturers who needed printed plans or specialized programs for their CNC machines that weren’t compatible with Autocad, Katia or Solidworks. Pressbreak or plasma cutter manufacturers get cheaper programs designed for their machines and used the old .dfx (I think??) for shapes to be put in their old style machines. Smaller companies resist upgrading anything.
So if you don’t work for or with Big Auto, John Deere or Aerospace keep your older programs on an old computer (not connected to the internet!) for stubborn companies that will be happy to work with you because ‘’you understand them.’’ You’ll beat out a lot of competitors if you have some of these older applications and maybe an older guy you can call on who’s great with the older technologies.
